Bank Mandiri Shares Weaken When #BoycottBankMandiri Resounds, Coincidence or Sentiment?

ZOAHARIAN.COM - PT Bank Mandiri (Persero) Tbk shares with issuer code BMRI moved lower in trading Monday (24/8/2026) morning. This movement was in the spotlight amidst many calls #BoycottBankMandiri on social media.
BMRI Down at the Beginning of Trading
Account Polemic IDR 80.9 Million Triggers Calls for a Boycott
There is No Evidence that BMRI Has Dropped Due to the Boycott

Based on observations at around 09.20 WIB, BMRI shares were at the level of Rp. 4,190 per share, down Rp. 30 or 0.71 percent compared to the previous trading close at Rp. 4,220.

In trading Friday (21/8/2026), BMRI shares closed at IDR 4,220 or rose 1.69 percent. In this trading, BMRI opened at IDR 4,170, briefly touching the highest level of IDR 4,240 and the lowest level of IDR 4,170.

The correction in BMRI shares at the start of trading on Monday showed that there was selling pressure compared to Friday's closing position.

However, this decline cannot be directly linked to calls for a boycott of Bank Mandiri which have been circulating on social media.

Stock movements are influenced by various factors, ranging from investors' buying and selling actions, overall market conditions, banking sector sentiment, economic conditions, to company prospects and fundamentals.

Therefore, journalistically, it is more appropriate to say that BMRI shares fell amidst the many calls for a boycott, not fell as a result of the boycott.

The call for #BoycottBankMandiri emerged after the polemic about blocking accounts belonging to Supriyono alias Botok, Coordinator of the United Pati Community Alliance (AMPB).

Supriyono said that the account had funds of around Rp. 80.9 million, which according to his statement was a combination of personal money and community donations for the needs of AMPB activities.

The polemic then developed after Bank Mandiri provided clarification that the account blocking was carried out at the request of law enforcement officials and in accordance with applicable procedures.

This clarification also became a topic of discussion among netizens. A number of social media users then called for a boycott and stated that they would move their funds from Bank Mandiri to other banks.

Even though they occurred simultaneously, there is not enough evidence to confirm that the BMRI correction of 0.71 percent at the start of trading Monday was caused by calls for a boycott.

Stock prices can move quickly due to a combination of various investor sentiments and activities. To find out whether this issue really puts significant pressure on BMRI shares, it is necessary to observe transaction volume and share movements until the close of trading.

If selling pressure continues throughout the day with increasing trading volume, negative sentiment towards BMRI should be of concern to investors. On the other hand, if BMRI strengthens again, the morning correction could just be a short-term trading dynamic.
