Roblox Tightens Rules, Game That Makes Children "Doomscrolling" Now in the Spotlight

ZOAHARIAN.COM - Roblox is starting to tighten rules on game design that are seen as encouraging players, especially young users, to continue consuming content through an endlessly scrollable feed.

This policy emerged after Roblox discovered a mechanism in one of the games that combined the activity of watching content with an in-game reward system. This pattern is considered to have the potential to make players stay in front of the screen longer.

Quoted from Polygon, Friday (27/8/2026), the game that is of concern is Steal an Egg. This game has attracted attention because it presents a virtual treadmill that players can use to improve their character's abilities.

However, the treadmill is not just part of the game mechanics. When using it, players can open a short video feed and continue viewing various content without having to leave the game.

The Virtual Treadmill That Sparked Debate

This mechanism was then compared with the doomscrolling phenomenon, namely the habit of scrolling content continuously from one upload to the next without a clear stopping point.

What makes the mechanism in Steal an Egg even more of a concern is the advantage in the game.

Players don't just get entertainment from the videos they watch. They also gain certain benefits for character development. In other words, the longer players stay to enjoy the content, the greater the reason they have to stay in the game.

This combination of infinite scroll and a reward system is what Roblox is paying attention to.

Roblox Tightens Young User Protection

Roblox is now clarifying the rules for developers. In certain game categories, developers are prohibited from rewarding players for watching a continuous, infinitely scrollable video or image feed.

This means that developers can't simply combine an endless media feed with a reward system that depends on the duration or activity of content consumption.

This step was taken after Steal an Egg was removed from the Roblox platform.

However, Roblox does not completely prohibit the use of video in games. Video content can still be used as long as the design does not encourage players to continue watching indefinitely in order to earn rewards.

This limitation becomes increasingly important because the majority of Roblox users come from younger age groups who are relatively more susceptible to digital designs that keep users on the platform.

What is Doomscrolling?

Doomscrolling is basically the behavior of continuously scrolling the screen to see the next content, even when one actually has nothing to continue with.

This phenomenon is widely associated with theinfinite scrollsystem. Once one piece of content is complete, the next content is immediately available so users have no natural endpoint.

For children, patterns like this can be a challenge in themselves. The absence of clear limits has the potential to make device usage time longer.

In the case of Steal an Egg, the problem becomes more complex because the mechanism is integrated with the game system.

Players have two reasons to stay: want to see the next content and also want to gain benefits in the game.

It's Not Just About Content

Roblox's new policy shows a change in the way it views child safety in the digital space.

Protecting young users is not just about whether content contains harmful material or not. The way a feature is designed can also influence user behavior

Reward systems, notifications, endless feeds, and mechanisms that make players feel like they have to stay active can create incentives to extend usage time.

Because of this, Roblox has chosen to limit combinations of features deemed to have the potential to encourage such behavior, especially when targeting younger users.

This step is also a signal to game developers: making interesting games does not mean being free to design mechanisms that encourage players to keep staring at the screen indefinitely.

In the midst of increasing attention to children's safety in the digital world, game design is now required not only to be exciting and entertaining, but must also consider how these features shape the habits of its users.
