US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll Resigns, Relationship with Pete Hegseth Spotlighted

ZOAHARIAN.COM - United States (US) Army Minister Dan Driscoll reportedly submitted his resignation after about 18 months in office. The decision adds to the list of senior US military officials leaving President Donald Trump's administration.

Driscoll's resignation was confirmed by CBS, the BBC's media partner in the United States. The report said his departure came after months of tension between Driscoll and US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

The White House appreciated Driscoll's performance. In a statement provided to CBS, the administration said Driscoll had been highly effective in pushing Trump's agenda to“Make America Strong Again”and provided extraordinary leadership during various military operations.

Driscoll, who was 41, was one of the youngest officers ever to lead the U.S. Department of the Army. He is also known as Trump's“drone guy”because of his attention to the development of drone technology and new technologies used on the battlefield.

Tensions at the Pentagon are in the spotlight

Although the full reasons for his resignation have not been disclosed, Driscoll's relationship with Hegseth is of concern. CBS reported that there had been months of conflict between the two.

Driscoll is also known to have a close relationship with former Army Chief of Staff Randy George. George himself was reportedly asked by Hegseth to resign.

Driscoll's departure comes amid major changes at the Pentagon. Since taking office as Defense Secretary, Hegseth has replaced or dismissed more than a dozen senior military officials, including a number of top leaders from the Navy and Air Force.

Apart from Driscoll, a number of other important names have also left their positions. These include Navy Minister John Phelan, who resigned suddenly in April, as well as a number of senior officers such as Randy George, Army General David Hodne and Major General William Green.

Served in Iraq

Before joining the ranks of the Trump administration, Driscoll had a military background. He joined the US Army as an officer in 2007 and later commanded a cavalry platoon.

In 2009, he was deployed to Iraq for several months. His experience in the military then combined with his legal background and interest in defense technology.

Driscoll is a graduate of Yale Law School and is known as one of the closest people to US Vice President JD Vance. The two are said to have been friends since college.

Engage in Russian-Ukrainian Diplomacy

Driscoll's name also emerged in diplomatic efforts to end the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Last year, he played an important role in talks regarding the conflict. He made a number of foreign trips and met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Domestically, Driscoll is also one of the figures involved in implementing the Trump administration's policy regarding the deployment of the National Guard in a number of US cities.

In addition to leading the Department of the Army, Driscoll briefly took over as acting director of theBureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

Major Changes in the US Military

Driscoll's resignation highlights a major overhaul of the US defense environment under Hegseth's leadership.

As the highest civilian official in the Department of the Army, the Secretary of the Army has major responsibilities for the U.S. Army, including active duty troops, the National Guard and reserve forces.

Driscoll's departure now raises new questions about who will replace him and how the change in leadership will affect Trump's defense agenda going forward.
