ZOAHARIAN.COM  – The long wait for the Indonesian National Team has finally paid off. The Garuda squad officially became champions of the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup after beating Thailand in a penalty shootout in the final match at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK), Monday (5/10/2026) evening.

The match was full of drama. Indonesia and Thailand both showed persistent play until the match had to last 120 minutes.

The 2-2 draw lasted until the end of extra time. The title ultimately had to be determined through a penalty shootout.

Indonesia actually has to work hard to get these results. Garuda first opened the scoring through Dean James in the 84th minute.

This goal made the SUGBK public roar. However, Thailand did not give up. Only a few minutes later, Sanron Iklas managed to score the equalizer.

The 1-1 score lasted until normal time ended and the match continued into extra round.

Drama occurred again in extra time. Thailand was actually able to take the lead after Peeradol Chamrasamee scored a goal in the 110th minute.

Indonesia was trailing 1-2 and match time was running out.

However, when Thailand's victory seemed in sight, Garuda again showed its competitive mentality.

Elkan Baggott appeared as a savior.

The Indonesian national team defender scored a goal with a header in the 116th minute. The goal changed the score to 2-2 and meant the match had to go to a penalty shootout.

Emil Audero Becomes a Hero

The drama is not over yet.

In the penalty shootout, the Indonesian players appeared calm. Garuda executors were able to carry out their duties well.

On the other hand, Thailand failed to maximize two opportunities. One of their penalty kicks hit the crossbar, while another was stopped by Emil Audero.

Indonesia finally won 4-2 in a penalty shootout.

This victory was immediately greeted by an explosion of joy from players, coaching staff and tens of thousands of supporters who filled SUGBK.

The trophy officially belongs to Indonesia.
