M 6.1 Earthquake Rocks Vanuatu, No Tsunami Warning

ZOAHARIAN.COM - An earthquake measuring 6.1 magnitude rocked the Vanuatu Islands on Sunday, August 16 2026. As of the latest report, there is no information regarding casualties or damage to infrastructure due to the shock.

Quoting Anadolu Agency, the earthquake was recorded as occurring at a depth of 155.1 kilometers based on data from the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ). With this depth, the earthquake is quite deep compared to shallow earthquakes which generally have more potential to cause major damage on the surface.

The epicenter of the earthquake was around the coordinates 14.52 degrees south latitude and 167.23 degrees east longitude. No tsunami warning was issued after the earthquake occurred.

The Vanuatu Islands are in the Pacific region which is known to have high tectonic activity. Earthquakes occur quite frequently in this area due to the meeting of tectonic plates in the Pacific Ring of Fire area.

Earthquake records in Vanuatu show the region has previously experienced a number of strong shakings. In September last year, an earthquake measuring 6.4 occurred off the southeastern coast of Vanuatu.

Meanwhile, the 6.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred about a year earlier had a more serious impact. The shock in the early hours of the morning caused buildings on the main island of Vanuatu to sway violently.

According to government data submitted by the United Nations Office of Humanitarian Affairs, the earthquake killed 12 people and left 210 people injured. A total of 1,698 other people were reported to have been displaced.

For the latest earthquake on August 16 2026, authorities are still monitoring possible further impacts. Until the latest information, there have been no reports of casualties or damage to infrastructure.

This situation may still change along with the data collection and inspection process in areas affected by the earthquake.
