The bang sounded like thunder or a heavy object falling. The loud sound was reportedly heard in a number of areas in Gorontalo Province and made residents wonder about the source.

Before the boom was heard, several residents claimed to have seen a bright flash of light across the sky. One of the reports came from the Telaga area, Gorontalo Regency.
