ZOAHARIAN.COM - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an early warning for high waves in a number of Indonesian waters starting Sunday, 23 August 2026. The warning is valid until 26 August 2026, with different start times according to the characteristics of each region.

BMKG does not predict extreme waves above 6 meters or very high waves with a height of 4-6 meters. However, as many as 14 waters have the potential to experience high waves of 2.5–4 meters.

Meanwhile, as many as 184 other waters are in the medium wave category with a height of around 1.25–2.5 meters.

Areas that have the potential to experience high waves are spread across a number of areas, starting from Banten, the southern waters of Indonesia, East Nusa Tenggara to West Sumatra.

The following is a list of waters that fall into the high wave category:

• Pandeglang Southern Waters

• Pandeglang West Sunda Strait

Indonesian Territory

• Lampung West Indian Ocean

• Banten South Indian Ocean

East Nusa Tenggara

• Western Sumba Strait

• Sawu Sea

• Southern Waters of Sumba

• Sabu-Raijua Northern Waters

• Southern Waters of Sabu-Raijua

West Sumatra

• Western Waters of Siberut

• Western Waters of Sipora

• East Pagai Waters

• West Pagai Waters

BMKG explained that sea wave conditions are influenced by wind patterns and increasing wind speeds in a number of areas.

In East Nusa Tenggara, for example, the wind is predicted to blow from the northeast to southeast at a speed of around 8–35 knots. This condition can increase wave height in the surrounding waters.

184 waters fall into the moderate wave category

Apart from the 14 waters that have the potential to experience high waves, BMKG noted that 184 waters are in the medium wave category, namely with a height of 1.25–2.5 meters.

The affected areas spread from Sumatra to Papua. Some of them include Aceh, Bengkulu, Bangka Belitung, Lampung, Central Java, East Java, DI Yogyakarta, Bali, West Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, NTB, Sulawesi, Maluku, North Maluku, West Papua, Southwest Papua and a number of other water areas.

• Aceh: 5 waters

• Bengkulu: 5 waters

• IN Yogyakarta: 4 waters

• East Java: 16 waters

• Bali: 5 waters

• NTB: 6 waters

• North Sulawesi: 6 waters

• Maluku: 21 waters

• North Maluku: 18 waters

• Southwest Papua: 4 waters

• West Papua: 5 waters

Moderate wave conditions are also predicted to occur in a number of waters south of Java Island, including theIndian Ocean south of West Java, Central Java, DI Yogyakarta and East Java.

Fishermen and Sea Service Users Asked to Be Alert

This high wave warning is of particular concern to fishermen, ferryboats, shipping operators and people who carry out activities in coastal areas.

The public is advised to pay attention to weather information and sea conditions before carrying out activities. Waves of 2.5–4 meters can increase the risk, especially for small boats and ships with limited ability to deal with rough sea conditions.

With the warning valid until 26 August 2026, coastal communities and sea transportation users need to continue to monitor the latest BMKG information because wind and wave conditions can change at any time.
